In 2007, the Ministry of Education, Government of India, established the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing, Kancheepuram (IIITDM Kancheepuram) as an Institute of National Importance. The Institute is situated on the periphery of Chennai, off Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road, approximately 25 kilometres from Chennai Airport and 17 kilometres from Tambaram Railway Station.
It is an institute of higher education that specialises in the teaching of engineering that is oriented around design and manufacturing. In the core and applied areas of Science and Engineering, the Institute provides B. Tech., Dual Degree, and M. Tech. programmes in Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Smart Manufacturing. Additionally, it offers inter-disciplinary M.
